The field of HIV and hepatitis coinfection has attracted substantial interest in recent years. Following the success of the first International Workshop on HIV and Hepatitis Coinfection in December 2004, nearly 350 clinicians and researchers congregated in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, January 12-14, 2006, for the 2nd HIV and Hepatitis Coinfection Workshop. Over the course of the meeting, the most critical advances and controversies regarding the impact and management of viral hepatitis in HIV-infected patients were discussed. At the end of the workshop, participants returned home with a feeling that this meeting is becoming an important venue for discussions regarding treatment for coinfected patients and an invaluable resource for policy recommendations.
