We describe a woman with chronic dermatitis who had positive patch-test reactions to numerous products containing benzyl alcohol. Of note, she was found to have a reaction to Aveeno Moisturizing Lotion, the label of which listed a synonym of benzyl alcohol. Our patient was also found to have an allergy to balsam of Peru, a known cross-reacting substance that contains benzyl alcohol. This case highlights the importance of patch testing with personal products and the investigation of antigen synonyms.
