Take-Home Message

We are still in the infancy stages of CPOE; many healthcare organizations have yet to fully integrate their systems and make use of the available technology. Lessons can be learned from the experiences of other organizations, and these lessons should be incorporated into plans to update/upgrade technology. It is wise to remember that the systems were designed by humans, and as such, they are not perfect. There will always be loopholes and room for error. The onus is on the healthcare worker to respect the technology for what it is, and to not rely falsely on the technology as the knowledge expert.
