Factors Associated With the Success of CPOE
Some published reports have targeted specific factors that facilitate the appropriate use of CPOE. These success factors were evaluated in a multicenter qualitative study conducted by researchers at the Oregon Health and Science University.[12] The study was conducted over a 7-year period.
On the basis of their investigations, the researchers found the following principles for successful CPOE implementation, classified into 4 broad categories: computer technology principles (ability to meet information needs, ability to customize, costs); personal principles (perceived value to users and tradeoffs, training and support); organizational principles (collaborative project management, improvement through evaluation and learning); and environmental principles (motivation and context for implementing systems).
The authors suggest that CPOE implementations have both an upside and a downside. Organizations that implement the technology with the least difficulty are able to maximize the successes and minimize the stresses by effectively managing unintended or unforeseen obstacles.[12] Other studies have suggested that before CPOE systems can be effectively developed and implemented, workflow and decision support processes need to be studied.[13,14]
