Does Periodontitis Cause Myocardial Infarction?

Researchers investigated 88 patients with a history of recent acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and a matched group without a history of AMI.[8] They discovered a strong link between history of AMI and five periodontal risk vectors: the percentage of sites with bleeding on probing, number of sites with pocket-probing depth of 6 mm or greater, number of teeth lost, and the proportion of mesial/distal sites with significant bone loss measured by the distance from the cemento-enamel junction and the marginal bone level.
