Introduction

Tobacco smoke contains as many as 4000 chemical constituents and its composition may vary substantially, depending on the source of the tobacco and the way it is smoked. At least 60 toxic compounds have been identified in tobacco smoke, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, nitroso compounds and aromatic amines (Utiger, 1998; Shiverick & Salafia, 1999). There is now ample evidence that tobacco smoking causes endocrine changes in humans; in this review, we address these effects and analyse the impact of smoking in the various parts of the endocrine system.
