The new JCAHO medication management standards place a greater emphasis on medication safety and are more detailed and prescriptive than previous standards. Compliance with the standards may pose a challenge to many hospital pharmacists, particularly where physician compliance is required. The standards should increase the role of the pharmacist in managing appropriate and safe medication use throughout the organization. At a minimum, they should provide pharmacists with the authority to implement improvements in medication safety in organizations that have been slow or reluctant to do so.
