Initial Laboratory Analyses

CBC with differential: hemoglobin 11.6 g/L, hematocrit 35.4%, platelets 334 mm3, total white blood count 13,900/mm3 with 65% granulocytes, 20% bands, 9% lymphocytes

C-reactive protein 0.3 mg/dL

Metabolic profile: sodium 127 mEq/L, potassium 4.1 mEq/L, chloride 88 mEq/L, bicarbonate 29mEq/L, blood urea nitrogen 16 mg/dL, creatinine 0.4 mg/dL, total protein 6.5 g/dL, albumin 3.2 g/dL, total bilirubin 0.2 mg/dL, alkaline phosphatase 103 U/L, AST 51U/L, ALT 59 U/L, prealbumin 9.4 mg/dl, LDH 506 U/L

PT 20.5 sec, PTT 32 sec, INR ratio 1.9, fibrinogen 249

Urinalysis: specific gravity 1.035, negative for WBCs and RBCs

Stool negative for blood, leukocytes, and rotavirus

Chest radiography: Bilateral coarse interstitial infiltrates

Blood culture, urine culture, stool, and CSF culture were reported as negative.

Tracheal aspirate culture grew methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus and Enterobacter.
