Role of HPV Testing in Management of Women with Abnormal Cervical Cytology

In 2001, the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP) hosted a consensus conference, during which new evidence-based guidelines were developed for management of women with cervical cytological abnormalities and cervical cancer precursors.[15] These guidelines were developed in response to the new 2001 Bethesda System, advances in the understanding of HPV, and the natural history of cervical cancer precursors, as well as new technologies such as sensitive HPV testing and liquid-based cytology screening.
