Efficacy and Safety of Stabilised Hydrogen Peroxide Cream (Crystacide) in Mild-to-Moderate Acne Vulgaris: A Randomised, Controlled Trial Versus Benzoyl Peroxide Gel

Topical BP is very effective in the treatment of mild-to-moderate papulopustular AV and this compound is widely used in this clinical indication. However, BP can cause skin irritation, erythema or dryness.[6] BP rapidly decomposes into benzoic acid and hydrogen peroxide. The antibacterial activity of BP is mainly due to the powerful oxidising activity of hydrogen peroxide. Benzoic acid can cause skin irritation, dryness and mild erythema. A new formulation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), stabilised in monoglycerides cream (HPS) (Crystacide 1%), indicated in the topical treatment of superficial skin infections, is now available. Until this study, no clinical data were available regarding the efficacy and safety profile of this compound in the treatment of acne. Our study demonstrated, for the first time, that HPS cream has been shown a similar efficacy to BP in the treatment of mild-to-moderate AV. HPS has been shown to significantly reduce total, inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesion counts in acneic patients. Our results support the hypothesis that hydrogen peroxide alone is an effective anti-acne agent. Furthermore, in comparison with BP 4% gel, HPS cream has shown a better local tolerability profile with a low rate of skin erythema.
