Summary

Endoscopy can be a valuable diagnostic test in patients with GERD. However, the routine use of endoscopy to confirm the clinical suspicion of GERD is rarely, if ever, warranted. But endoscopy should be considered in all cases where the diagnosis of upper gastrointestinal symptoms thought initially to have been related to GERD remains unclear, when alarm symptoms are present that suggest the possibility of complications of GERD or other diseases, or when the referring physician is interested in screening for Barrett's esophagus.
