Factitious diseases occur in patients who voluntarily self-induce physical or psychological symptoms to obtain personal gain. Instead, their actions may produce an unpleasant situation by exposing them to the risk of permanent medical injury or death. The diagnosis of surreptitious hypoglycemia should be suspected in any patient with unexplained hypoglycemia who has access to insulin or oral sulfonylureas.
