The recent description of the first susceptibility gene for Crohn's disease has ushered in a new era of investigation in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Identification of additional susceptibility genes and correlation of genetic alterations with clinical characteristics of disease surely will lead to finding the causes of, and hopefully the cure for, IBD. Nothing in this field can be more exciting for investigators, clinicians, and patients alike.
