It literally pays to keep up to date with coding changes and follow proper coding procedures. Just because a practice or healthcare system is large does not mean that the billing department is doing their job well, so it is helpful if the treating physician has a working knowledge of coding.

How can the physician keep up with coding? Start by making sure you have a copy of the current ICD-CM and CPT books. In these volumes, you'll find the official coding language that is indispensable in billing for services. Next, look in professional journals, conference handouts, and other resources. Many free online newsletters and coding advice columns will mention changes than may have an impact on your practice. There also are many commercial resources, such as coding seminars and newsletters, which will help you stay abreast of the latest developments.

Good luck, and happy coding!
