Surgical Staging

Surgical staging of the mediastinum is often performed prior to primary resection. Historically, this task has been performed by mediastinoscopy, anterior mediastinotomy, and ultimately thoracotomy. Percutaneous transthoracic needle biopsy using CT guidance has been steadily improving with advances in scanning techniques. Transbronchial needle aspiration and endoscopic ultrasound with fine-needle aspiration are less invasive techniques that may also be used to stage the mediastinum prior to surgical resection.
