The role of dietary intake and nutritional status on the general health of individuals and population groups remains to be fully quantified. However, it is an area that has very important public health implications, particularly with respect to the recommended levels of dietary intake for specific nutrients in the United States[1] and the United Kingdom[2] as well as other countries. The UK Nutrition Society, the leading European Society on aspects of nutritional science, recently held its Diamond Jubilee meeting at the University of Sheffield, England (July 10-12, 2001), where a number of key plenary and original communication nutritional papers were presented.[3]
