Lysine's efficacy for herpes labialis may lie more in prevention than treatment. Studies do not support the use of lysine for decreasing the severity or duration of outbreaks. Most patients tolerate the supplement well. Larger trials are needed to conclusively determine lysine's role in the treatment of herpes labialis.
