In 2011, pulmonologists earned a mean income of $242,000 -- slightly more than in the previous year. Of the 25 specialties surveyed, they are in the middle ranks in compensation. More than one third of pulmonologists earned $200,000 to $299,000. Some 13% earned $400,000 or more, while 14% earned $100,000 or less.
For employed pulmonologists, compensation covers salary, bonus, and profit-sharing contributions. For partners, compensation includes earnings after tax-deductible business expenses but before income tax. Compensation excludes non-patient-related activities (eg, expert witness services, speaking engagements, and product sales).
