In 2011, pediatricians earned a mean income of $156,000—an increase over the previous year. However, pediatricians earned the least of the specialties surveyed in both years. Almost one quarter of pediatricians (24%) earned $100,000 or less—an increase over the figures reported in Medscape's 2011 survey, About 12% of pediatricians earned $250,000 or more, about the same as a year ago.
For employed pediatricians, compensation includes salary, bonus, and profit-sharing contributions. For partners, compensation includes earnings after tax-deductible business expenses but before income tax. Compensation excludes non-patient-related activities (eg, expert witness fees, speaking engagements, and product sales).
