In 2011, the mean income for family physicians was $158,000 – very similar to what primary care physicians reported in the previous year. Almost one quarter of family physicians earned $100,000 or less; last year, 18% reported this mean income. About 12% of family physicians earned $250,000 or more. In 2010, about 12% earned that amount.
For employed family physicians, compensation includes salary, bonus, and profit-sharing contributions. For partners, compensation includes earnings after tax-deductible business expenses but before income tax. Compensation excludes non-patient-related activities (eg, expert witness fees, speaking engagements, and product sales).
