John C. Reed, MD, PhD, is Chief Executive Officer, Professor, and Donald Bren Executive Chair at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, where he has worked as a scientist and leader for more than 15 years.
Dr. Reed's research team studies the basic mechanisms that determine when cells live and when they die and, more important, how these systems go awry in diseases such as cancer. Advances in Dr. Reed's laboratory have resulted in a new cancer therapy that is now in final phase 3 clinical trials, as well as in a number of drug-discovery programs at earlier stages of development for cancer, stroke, and autoimmune diseases.
Dr. Reed has authored more than 800 research publications. The Institute for Scientific Information recognized Dr. Reed as the world's most cited scientist from 1995 to 2005 in the fields of cell biology and general biomedicine. Thomson Scientific named him one of its top 10 "Doctors of the Decade, 1995-2005." Dr. Reed is an inventor on more than 90 patents and is the founder or cofounder of 4 biotechnology companies. In 2011, he was elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
