Why are astringents and acetic acid solutions no longer used to treat otitis externa (OE)?

Before antibiotic treatment was recommended for OE, astringents and acetic acid solutions were commonly used to treat this condition. These solutions can be painful to inflamed ear canals and are not generally used today.
