Successful management of hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) begins with early recognition of the disease and supportive care. Management includes good control of volume status, electrolyte abnormalities, hypertension, and anemia. Supportive care measures apply to both Shiga toxin–producing E coli hemolytic-uremic syndrome (STEC-HUS) and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS). Additional special considerations for aHUS are listed at the end of this section.
