The following laboratory studies are suggested in neonates in whom sepsis and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) are suspected:

  • Peripheral blood smear

  • Prothrombin time

  • Activated partial thromboplastin time

  • Fibrinogen

  • Fibrinogen split products or D-dimer
