Obtain an echocardiogram to evaluate the cardiac contractility and ejection fraction. Note that neonates with HIE receiving therapeutic hypothermia may experience a reduction in cardiac output and descending aorta blood flow. [125] Systemic organ perfusion and cerebral metabolism may be affected by preferential cerebral distribution of cardiac output in conjunction with an increase in systemic peripheral vascular resistance.
