Complications of pertussis can include the following (see Prognosis, Treatment, and Medication):

  • Hypoxic encephalopathy

  • Tuberculosis activation

  • Epistaxis, hemoptysis

  • Hernia

  • Reinduction of paroxysmal coughing with upper respiratory infections

  • Seizures

  • Cerebral hemorrhage

  • Coma and death
