Which lab studies are performed in the evaluation of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC)?

For newborns with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), the following studies should be obtained as indicated:

  • White blood cell (WBC) count

  • Hemoglobin concentration

  • Platelet count

  • Prothrombin time (PT)

  • Activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT)

  • Electrolyte levels

  • Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) profile

  • Inflammatory markers, such as C-reactive protein (CRP)
