Answer

Answer

Hypothyroidism is an expected sequela of total thyroidectomy. In goiter surgery, the extent of thyroidectomy is controversial. The main goal of surgery is to prevent recurrent hyperthyroidism because recurrent hyperthyroidism after surgery is more difficult than permanent hypothyroidism to manage. Because of this fact, the present authors recommend total thyroidectomy in this setting.
