Answer

Answer

Removal of the thyroid gland does not immediately relieve thyrotoxicosis because the half-life of circulating T4 is 7-8 days. As thyroid hormone levels decrease and as symptoms resolve, medications should be gradually weaned over the weeks after surgery. An endocrinologist should be consulted to assist in this process.
