Answer

The first step in managing a thyrotoxic crisis during thyroidectomy is to stop the procedure. Intravenous beta-blockers, PTU, sodium iodine, and steroids are administered to control sympathetic activity, the release of thyroid hormone, and hyperthermia. Use cooling blankets and cooled intravenous fluids to reduce the patient's body temperature. Carefully monitor oxygenation, because oxygen demands increase dramatically during a thyroid storm.
