Answer

Answer

Hypoparathyroidism is another feared complication of thyroid surgery. A retrospective study by McMullen et al of bilateral lateral neck dissection for thyroid cancer found the overall risk for permanent hypoparathyroidism to be 37%. The cohort, 62 patients treated by a single surgeon at an academic, tertiary medical center, included patients who did and those who did not also undergo total thyroidectomy and central compartment dissection.
