Cricoid pressure is intended to reduce the risk of aspiration, although its effectiveness is debated. [19, 20]

Decreased rates of successful insertion have been seen with application of cricoid pressure. [4, 5, 6] Therefore, if cricoid pressure is applied, it may need to be released in order to properly position the LMA or intubate through the intubating laryngeal mask airway (ILMA).
