Severe cases can be treated with an epidural blood patch performed by an anesthesiologist or a pain specialist. Pencil-tip (Whitacre) needles are associated with a significantly lower incidence of post–spinal puncture headaches than are standard bevel-tip (Quincke) needles. [25]
