Answer

The need for emergent thoracotomy is an absolute contraindication to tube thoracostomy.

Relative contraindications include the following:

  • Coagulopathy

  • Pulmonary bullae

  • Pulmonary, pleural, or thoracic adhesions

  • Loculated pleural effusion or empyema

  • Skin infection over the chest tube insertion site
