Answer

Answer

Dexmedetomidine is a medication that has the ability to provide sedation without causing respiratory depression. It resembles clonidine in that it is an alpha2 -adrenergic receptor agonist. It has been administered to adults by IM injection for perioperative anxiolysis and sedation. There is some evidence to suggest that dexmedetomidine may be useful for procedural sedation in children, but more and larger controlled studies are needed to evaluate its safety and efficacy in this setting.
