Answer

The function of sedation is management of anxiety, pain, and control of excessive motion. Diagnostic procedures for which emergency department (ED) sedation may be indicated include the following:

  • Lumbar puncture

  • Arthrocentesis

  • Bone marrow biopsy

  • Sexual assault examination

  • Radiologic evaluation (CT, MRI)
