In the absence of trauma, periorbital cellulitis can be caused by the following microbes:

  • Streptococcus pneumoniae

  • Haemophilus influenzae type b - Was the predominant cause of periorbital cellulitis prior to the advent of the Hib vaccine but has now been shown to cause only rare cases [1, 11, 12, 13]
