Gastroenteritis may occur at any age. Morbidity and mortality are much higher in the very young and the very old. It is a major cause of mortality among children younger than 5 years in developing countries, and persons aged 65 years or older account for the majority of hospitalizations and deaths in the United States. [19]

Norovirus has become the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis in children younger than 5 years seeking medical attention in the United States since the introduction of the rotavirus vaccine. [9]
