Oxidant injury eventually leads to cast formation of cellular debris in the airways, thus contributing to pulmonary failure. A pediatric study has shown that aerosolized heparin/N -acetylcysteine decreases the incidence of atelectasis, reintubation rates, and overall mortality. [53]
