Complications of epiglottitis may include the following:

  • Meningitis

  • Epiglottic abscess

  • Cervical adenitis

  • Vocal granuloma

  • Subsequent necrotizing fasciitis of the head and neck (rare)

  • Cartilaginous metaplasia of the epiglottis

  • Pneumonia

  • Pulmonary edema

  • Empyema

  • Pneumothorax

  • Pneumomediastinum (rare)

  • Pericarditis

  • Septic arthritis

  • Cellulitis

  • Septic shock

  • Death (asphyxia)
