Where possible, drugs that may be contributing to ED should be discontinued. However, ED as a manifestation of hypogonadism from abuse of anabolic steroids can persist for months to years after cessation of steroid use. Interim treatment for hypogonadism in such patients, while hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal function recovers, has included judicious use of testosterone replacement therapy, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), and selective estrogen receptor modulators (eg, clomiphene).
