Answer

Yahaba et al performed a study on 91 patients who underwent inspiratory and expiratory multidetector CT (MDCT) to determine whether emphysematous changes alter the relationships between airflow limitation and airway dimensions. Images were evaluated for mean airway luminal area (Ai); wall area percentage (WA%) from the third to the fifth generation of 3 bronchi (B1, B5, B8) in the right lung; and low attenuation volume percent (LAV%). In patients without emphysema, Ai and WA% from both the inspiratory and expiratory scans were significantly correlated with FEV1, but no correlation was found in patients with emphysema. Also, emphysematous COPD patients with GOLD (Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease) stage 1 or 2 disease had significantly lower changes in B8 Ai than nonemphysematous patients.
