Answer

The influence of race on prognosis has been widely debated. The LUMINA study group examined SLE in black, white, and Hispanic patients in the United States (including Puerto Rico) and reported that both disease activity and poverty predicted higher mortality in racial and ethnic minorities. [78] In the Michigan Lupus Epidemiology and Surveillance program, the proportion of patients with renal disease was 2.2-fold higher, and that of progression to end-stage renal disease was 3.4-fold higher, in blacks than in whites.
