Esophagogastroduodenoscopy with appropriate biopsies, esophageal manometry assessment, and pH monitoring studies should be performed to survey and evaluate the upper gastrointestinal system. [132, 133] The following alterations can be evaluated:

  • Reflux due to decreased lower esophageal sphincter pressure

  • Severe esophagitis

  • Candida esophagitis

  • Barrett metaplasia

  • Esophageal cancer

  • Gastric vascular antral ectasia (GAVE; dilated submucosal capillaries), with an endoscopic appearance that has been described as “watermelon stomach”
