Causes include the following:

  • Septic meningitis (fungal, bacterial, mycobacterial)

  • Aseptic meningitis unrelated to relapsing polychondritis, ie, viral

  • Ménière disease

  • Temporal arteritis

  • Malignancy

  • Drug toxicity

  • Encephalitis or meningoencephalitis

  • Other causes of cerebral vasculitis

  • Other causes of seizure disorder

  • Leprosy
