Causes include the following:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (adult or juvenile)

  • Reactive arthritis

  • Acute gonococcal arthropathy

  • Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (formerly known as Wegener granulomatosis)

  • Polyarteritis nodosa

  • Systemic lupus erythematosus and other collagen-vascular disorders
