Guidelines from different groups offer a range of recommendations regarding the use of acupuncture for knee osteoarthritis, as follows:

  • The ACR conditionally recommends traditional Chinese acupuncture for patients with chronic moderate-to-severe pain who would be candidates for total knee arthroplasty but who either do not want it or have contraindications to it. [127]
  • The OARSI suggests that acupuncture may yield symptomatic benefit in patients with knee osteoarthritis. [69]
  • The AAOS strongly recommends against the use of acupuncture for symptomatic knee osteoarthritis. [136]
