Osteoarthritis affects more than 32 million individuals in the United States, though statistical figures are influenced by how the condition is defined—that is, by self-report, by radiographic or symptomatic criteria, or by a combination of these. [1, 58] On the basis of the radiographic criteria for osteoarthritis, more 50% of adults older than 65 years are affected by the disease.
