What are the most common causes of traumatic brain injury (TBI)?

A TBI is caused by an excessive force, blow, or penetrating injury to the head. The CDC reported the 2013 rates for principal mechanisms of TBI-related injuries, as associated with emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and deaths, to be as follows [1, 15] :

  • Falls (47.2%)

  • Being struck by or against objects (15.4%)

  • Motor vehicle crashes (13.7%)
