Causes of GBS-related death include acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), sepsis, pneumonia, venous thromboembolic disease, and cardiac arrest. Most cases of mortality are due to severe autonomic instability or from the complications of prolonged intubation and paralysis. [73, 74, 75, 76] The leading cause of death in elderly patients with GBS is arrhythmia.
